Happy Memorial Day!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

On Monday, Memorial Day, we will remember all those brave men and women who served, fought, and died for freedom, in this great country, the United States, and we will honor their bravery, dedication, and heroism.  Happy Memorial Day!

Without memory, there is no culture.  Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future. ~ Elie Wiesel

Last week in literature, my Sixth Graders will continue reading War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.  My students finished the analysis of The Tempest.  They learned the steps for writing a Biography.  They each choose either a literary or historical figure, or an artist who interests them, to write a biography about them. They finished the Wordly Wise workbook. Yay!  They also worked on finishing the grammar and punctuation workbooks.  In addition to this, they finished watching Inkheart by Cordelia Funke, which they enjoyed immensely.  They saw only five minutes of the DVD about War Horse, as we ran out of time.

This week in literature, my Sixth Graders will finish reading War Horse.  They will finish writing their biographies (many have already finished writing the biographies) and turn in the rewrites of their poems based on their favorite characters in The Tempest. They will return to the study of Literary Devices.  They will work on finishing the grammar and punctuation workbooks.  They will review for the Final Examination in English.  In addition to this, they will continue watching War Horse.

  • There will be a “Beach Pick-Up,” for our Middle School students, on Tuesday afternoon, May 28, at Moonlight Beach, Encinitas.
  • Our annual Field Meet will take place on Friday afternoon, May 31.  All are welcome to attend.
  • The Final Examinations: Monday, June 10, through Wednesday, June 12.
  • The “End of Year Music Program” will take place in the Amphitheater, on Wednesday afternoon, June 12.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Rewrites of your Persuasive Essays are now past due.  Please submit.
  • Study for your English Final.
  • Turn in any rewrites that are past due.

No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom, unless he be vigilant in its preservation. ~ General Douglas MacArthur

Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend, and have a grand week ahead.
