The Wizard of Oz!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

CONGRATULATIONS to all the ECDS students who participated in the Talent Show, on either Thursday or Friday of last week.  You all did an incredible job at demonstrating your wonderful talents.  Well done!  You were FABULOUS! 🙂

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Varma, who provided doughnuts last Friday, for all at ECDS, in honor of Smita’s fourteenth birthday.  It was a very welcome treat at the end of the week.  Many thanks! YUM! 🙂

THANK YOU to Janet Lombardi for the beautiful bouquet of flowers and the lovely yellow “signed by students” ribbon that you put together for Teachers’ Appreciation Week.  You are a GEM! 🙂

This coming week in literature, my Eighth Graders will examine and analyze The Odyssey by Homer, because they finished reading it last week.  They have now read one of the most important books in English literature.  Yahoo!  They will start reading their new book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, on Wednesday, May 10.  They will continue to practice the analysis of literature and how to apply C. (Claim), R. (Reference), and C. (Commentary), with respect to The Odyssey.  They will also apply the S.I.F.T. Method of analysis to The Odyssey: S. (Symbolism), I. (Imagery), F. (Figurative Language), and T. (Themes and Tone).  They will also work on their punctuation/editing workbooks.  They will commence watching The Odyssey, for Literature on DVD, as we did not have time for it last week.

This week in Drama Class, my Eighth Graders will continue with rehearsals for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, without using their scripts.  Please encourage your child to study his/her cues and lines.  The performance is scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, at 2:00p.m.

  • We look forward to seeing our mothers for a Mothers’ Day luncheon, on Friday, May 12.
  • The performances of The Wizard of Oz, which will commence on Friday evening, May 12, at 7:00p.m.  There will be two performances on Saturday, May 13.  It is an AMAZING SHOW!  Our ECDS students have worked extremely hard and are INCREDIBLE!
  • All ECDS students who are involved in The Wizard of Oz, are excused from homework and testing for my class, during the next two weeks.  However, all homework and tests will have to be completed after the show.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Please study your cues and lines for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
  • Study for the Literary Terms Test, which is scheduled for Friday, May 12.
  • Work on your novellas.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead.
