Jog-A-Thon/St. Patrick’s Day!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

I have been asked by my students to shorten my blog, so, in an attempt to accommodate their wishes, I will not repeat any information from a previous blog.

This coming week in literature, my Eighth Graders will follow Telemachus to Pylos, and they will hear what King Nestor has to report about Odysseus, and how he fought so bravely at Troy.  In addition to this, they will continue to write The Constitution, in their own words, and they will work on their “Novellas.”  This week in class, we will focus on writing the “Rising Action” and  the “Climax,” of their novellas.  They will also revisit “Proverbs,” “Literary Terms,” and commence the study of Greek and Latin Roots in the English language.

There is no meeting with Joel today, due to our Teachers’ Professional Growth Day.  Tomorrow, Saturday, I will be attending a Teachers’ Writing Workshop, at U.C.S.D.  The subject for exploration and discussion is “Why Students Write.”  I am looking forward to it.

My Eighth Graders are beginning to shine as they play their parts in Shakespeare’s,  A Midsummer Night’s Dream. 🙂  Although we still have a lot of work to do, I am truly happy with their acting and attention during rehearsals.  Well done, Eighth Graders!  This week in Drama Class, we will rehearse Scenes 9, 10, and maybe, Scene 11, if time permits.  At the moment, the performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is scheduled for June 14, in the afternoon.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study for the spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 12 in Wordly Wise.
  • Study the SAT words.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 12 of Wordly Wise.
  • Complete the CROSSWORD at the end of Lesson 12.
  • Finish Articles II and III of The Constitution, in your own words, for Friday.  You will be given class time to work on this project, on Monday and Tuesday.

  • On Sunday, March 12, set your clocks ahead one hour for Daylight Savings.
  • ECDS JOG-A-THON will take place on Friday, March 17.  This is a very worthwhile fundraiser.  For every $1,000 raised, a child will receive a lifesaving heart surgery in either Haiti or Kosovo.  All donations will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!  Sponsor sheets need to be completed and turned in by Wednesday, March 15.
  • CHANGE IN RUNNING TIME: The Eighth Graders will run/jog between 1:30p.m. and 2:00p.m.  ECDS needs parent volunteers for this special event.  If you will be available, please sign-up.  Many, many thanks! 🙂
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 23, and Friday, March 24.  I look forward to meeting with you.

May GREEN be the grass you walk on, may BLUE be the skies above you, may PURE be the joys that surround you, and may TRUE be the hearts that love you.  ~ An Old Irish Blessing

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🙂

Enjoy your weekend and have a grand week ahead.

Miss Susan 🙂
