Jog-A-Thon/St. Patrick’s Day!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

I have been asked by my students to shorten my blog, so, in an attempt to accommodate their wishes, I will not repeat any information from a previous blog.

This week in literature, my Sixth Graders will continue to read The Tempest by William Shakespeare.  We are making progress with our reading, and my Sixth Graders are highly amused by some of the speeches in it.   In addition to this, they will work on their “Children’s Book.”  This week in class, we will focus on writing the “Rising Action” and  the “Climax,” of their novellas.  They will also revisit “Proverbs,” “Literary Terms,” and commence the study of Greek and Latin Roots in the English language.  In addition to this, they will watch four more chapters of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, on DVD.

I am happy to report that the vast majority of my Sixth Graders scored A+’s/A’s on the Literary Terms Test, on Wednesday. Well done, Sixth Graders! I am so proud of you! 🙂

There is no meeting with Joel today, due to our Teachers’ Professional Growth Day.  Tomorrow, Saturday, I will attend a Teachers’ Writing Workshop, at U.C.S.D.  The subject for exploration and discussion is “Why Students Write.”  I am looking forward to it.

This week in Drama Class, my Sixth Graders will continue to read The Tempest with me, out in the amphitheater, on Tuesday.  Then, on Thursday, they will work on a skit with Mr. Rowe, for the monthly assembly.  They are scheduled to perform on May 5.  The subject is “Self-Control.”

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study for the spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 10 in Wordly Wise, for Wednesday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 1o of Wordly Wise.
  • Some students still need to turn in the rewrites of your “Stage Plays.”  Please turn them in by Wednesday, March 15.
  • Work on the “Climax” of your “Children’s Book.”

  • On Sunday, March 12, set your clocks ahead one hour for Daylight Savings.
  • ECDS JOG-A-THON will take place on Friday, March 17.  This is a very worthwhile fundraiser.  For every $1,000 raised, a child will receive a lifesaving heart surgery in either Haiti or Kosovo.  All donations will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!  Sponsor sheets need to be completed and turned in by Wednesday, March 15.
  • CHANGE IN RUNNING TIME: The Sixth Graders will run/jog between 2:00p.m. and 2:30p.m.  ECDS needs parent volunteers for this special event.  If you will be available, please sign-up.  Many, many thanks! 🙂
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 23, and Friday, March 24.  I look forward to meeting with you.

May GREEN be the grass you walk on, may BLUE be the skies above you, may PURE be the joys that surround you, and may TRUE be the hearts that love you.  ~ An Old Irish Blessing

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🙂

Enjoy your weekend and have a grand week ahead.
