Mardi Gras!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

Happy Mardi Gras, on February 28!

Last week in literature, my Eighth Graders read about Odysseus’ encounter with Nausicaa, Queen Arete, and King Alcinous, the Phaeacians, in Scheria.  They  continued their writing project, “Write The Constitution in your own words,” on Tuesday and Wednesday.  In preparation for writing their Novellas, we focused on the characteristics of a protagonist versus the characteristics of an antagonist, and the need for a creative conflict in a good fictional story.

I am happy to report that the majority of my Eighth Graders scored in the “A” range, on their spelling/vocabulary test.  Their weekly homework grades have improved.  Well done, Eighth Graders!  Keep up the great work! 🙂

On Friday, we met with Joel York, on Skype. He addressed the importance of Tone and Mood, in writing a novella.  He shared many interesting and helpful details with respect to Tone and Mood in a fictional story.  Well done, Joel! 🙂

This coming week in literature, my Eighth Graders will continue to follow Odysseus, as he journeys home to his beloved wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus.  In addition to this, they will continue to write The Constitution, in their own words, and they will work on their “Novellas.”  This week in class, we will focus on the plot structure of writing a book, and how to write an attention-grabbing Exposition, that will take the reader on an exciting quest through the Rising Action of their stories.

Last week in Drama Class, we blocked Scenes 13 (the last scene) of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  This week, we will watch a video of the play, on Tuesday, in order to inspire my students to act their parts with passion.  Then, we will commence rehearsals from the beginning to the end of the play.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study for the Literary Terms Test, on Friday.
  • Work on the plot of your novella.
  • Complete Joel’s homework for Friday.

Reminder:

  • ECDS JOG-A-THON will take place on Friday, March 17.  This is a very worthwhile fundraiser.  For every $1,000 raised, a child will receive a lifesaving heart surgery in either Haiti or Kosovo.  All donations will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!  Sponsor sheets need to be completed and turned in by Wednesday, March 15.  The Eighth Graders will run/jog between 2:00p.m. and 2:30p.m.  ECDS needs parent volunteers for this special event.  If you will be available, please sign up.  Many thanks!

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead.

Sincerely,

Miss Susan 🙂
