Spring Musical Auditions!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

CONGRATULATIONS to Smita Varna and John Gerdes, who won the classroom Spelling Bee, last Monday, and went forward to the School’s final, in the library, last Thursday. I am very proud of you!  The best of luck to you, John, as you go forward to the next level.  Well done! 🙂

Last Monday, I reviewed the Final Examinations with my Eighth Graders, and pointed out some areas of carelessness in their answers, with respect to capitalization, punctuation, chronological order, dates, tenses of verbs, and neatness in writing. Then, we had the classroom Spelling Bee, which took the rest of the class period.

In literature, my Eighth Graders were introduced to Odysseus, as we began to read a translation of Homer’s, The Odyssey.  I gave two full classes to this reading, as the book orders were late in arrival.  During their reading, my Eighth Graders were introduced to  Polyphemus, the Cyclops; the Lotus Eaters; Aeolus, the god of the winds; the savage Laestrygonians; and Circe, the enchantress. Now, they are on a trip to Hades, the underworld.

On Friday afternoon, we met with Joel York (author) on Skype, and he gave them an introduction to the part he will play in their current writing project.

This coming week in literature, my Eighth Graders will continue to read The Odyssey, and follow Odysseus on his journey back to his family, in Ithaca.  In addition to this, they will begin to put their thoughts to paper for their Novella.  This week in class, they will focus on the setting and the main characters.  They will also work in their punctuation/editing workbooks.

This week in Drama Class, we will block Scene 9 and Scene 10 of Shakespeare’s, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • All rewrites for the Career Project should be turned in on Monday, February 6.
  • Some students need to turn in their Dream Houses, to complete their Career Projects.  They are past the due date.
  • Study for spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 9, in Wordly Wise, on Friday.
  • Study the SAT words.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 9 of Wordly Wise, for Friday.
  • Delve into your creative minds, and think of a good plot for your novella, please remember that the setting is very important for a good story.
