Spring Musical Auditions!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

CONGRATULATIONS to Gwen Laats, Elena Lombardi, Faith Lyon, and Juna Messmann, who won the classroom Spelling Bee, last Monday, and went forward to the School’s final, in the library, last Thursday. I am very proud of you! An extra  special CONGRATULATIONS to Faith for placing “First” in the overall Spelling Bee, at ECDS. Well done! 🙂

Last Monday, the Spelling Bee, took the whole class period, but it was fun.  In literature, we discussed the messages in the story “The Nightingale and the Rose” by Oscar Wilde.  Then, I read aloud “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde.  My Sixth Graders also worked in their grammar workbooks and their punctuation/editing workbooks.  We also discussed their next writing project, Write and Illustrate a Children’s Book.”

On Friday afternoon, we met with Joel York (author) on Skype, and he gave them an introduction to the part he will play in their current writing project.

This coming week in literature, my Sixth Graders will examine the setting, characters, symbols, and themes, of “The Happy Prince.”  Then, they will continue to read The Tempest.  However, they will read it in class, as well as during Drama Class, as it is taking twice as long to read, because we read it in Shakespearean language, and then, the translation.  My Sixth Graders will also start their next writing assignment, and they will focus on the setting and the main characters.  They will continue to work in their grammar workbooks and the punctuation/editing workbooks.

Last week in Drama Class, the Sixth Graders and I tried different ways to read Shakespeare’s play The Tempest.  On Tuesday, we went out to the Amphitheater, and we read it in chorus, and on Thursday, we read it with dance movements.  This week, we will continue to find ways to make the experience of reading The Tempest enjoyable and fun.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Please study for the Literary Terms Test (the first column of the next page of literary terms), on Wednesday, February 8.
  • Delve into your creative minds, and think of a good plot for your Children’s Books, please remember that the setting and main characters are very important for a good story.

  • The Spring Musical Auditions, for The Wizard of Oz, will take place on Wednesday through Thursday, February 7 through February 9, respectively.  They will be held in the Performing Arts Room, after school, from 3:15p.m. to 6:00p.m.  We are looking for Student Leaders from the Middle School, to work with the Musical Director, the Director, the Choreographer, the Artistic Director, and the Stage Manager.  All are welcome to apply.
  • Valentine’s Day celebrations, on February 14.
  • Field Trip to the Oceanview Mines, in Pala, on Thursday, February 16.
  • Presidents’ Day, on Monday, February 20, therefore, no school.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead.
