Spelling Bee!

Dear Seventh Grade Parents and Students,

I am happy to report the majority of my Seventh Graders scored A+’s/A’s/B+’s on their Language Arts Final Examination, last Thursday.  They answered seventy-seven questions on the test.  Congratulations, Seventh Graders!  I am so proud of you!  Great job! 🙂

THANK YOU to all the parents who drove on our field trip on Friday.  Our children had a great time rock climbing. THANK YOU, Mr. Decking, for organizing it. 🙂

This week, ECDS will host its annual Spelling Bee.  I will give the first round of the Spelling Bee, on Monday, January 30, during Language Arts class.  The final Spelling Bee will given in the library on Thursday, February 2, by our Principal, Mr. Lehmunn.

This coming week in Literature, my Seventh Graders will commence reading the play, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.  It is a farcical comedy and is full of witty dialogue.  It is set in Victorian London, in which the two protagonists invent fictitious personae to avoid social obligations.  It is Wilde’s most popular play.  I will invite my students to read it in a haughty British accent, so we should have fun with this endeavor.

My Seventh Graders have finished their writing their Screenplays, so I am looking forward to reading them.  This week, they will learn about a Storyboard, and they will make a short one for their Screenplays, which will be due with the rewrites.

The next writing assignment for my Seventh Graders is “Write a Children’s Chapter Book.”  I will distribute the guidelines for it, on Tuesday, and they will begin working on it in class, on Wednesday.  This assignment will be accomplished in collaboration with Mr. Joel, a published author and friend of Mr. Decking.  We will Skype with Mr. Joel on Friday afternoons for ten weeks.  During this time, he will reinforce the narrative writing skills my students have studied to date.  In addition to this, he will elaborate on his experience as a published author, and he will guide them towards publication.  This is a wonderful and unique opportunity for our students.  Mr. Decking and I will facilitate this special class on Fridays, and we are excited about this adventure.

This week in Drama Class, we will block Scenes 6, 7, and maybe Scene 8 of Shakespeare’s, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Review Wordly Wise spelling/vocabulary, if you wish to do well on the Spelling Bee.
  • Study for spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 9, in Wordly Wise, on Thursday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 9 of Wordly Wise, for Thursday.
  • Delve into your creative minds, and think of a good plot for your Children’s Chapter Book.

  • ECDS will host an Open House on Sunday, January 29, from 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m.  We hope that you will attend.
  • The “Spelling Bee Finals” will be held in the library on Thursday, February 2.

Develop a passion for learning.  If you do, you will never cease to grow.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead.
