Happy New Year!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

Happy New Year and Welcome Back to School!  I hope that this New Year will bring you all much love, happiness, smiles, success, laughter, good health, and surprises on a daily basis.  I hope that you all have had a wonderful Holiday Season with your families and friends, and that your children will return to school happy and rested.

Tomorrow, we will begin a new year in the education of your teenagers.  They have a lot of new and exciting work to study, learn, research, ponder, explore, and discuss before June, 2017.

Bravo!/Congratulations!   A great performance was given by our Eighth Graders, during our annual Holiday Program.  Well done, Eighth Graders!  Great talent!  THANK YOU, Mrs. Crawford! 🙂

THANK YOU, to our wonderful and very helpful Homeroom Mom, Janet Lombardi, for all that you did for us, during our First Semester of school, at ECDS. You are a treasure! 🙂

The week before our Holiday Break from ECDS, my Eighth Graders finished reading Night by Elie Wiesel.  This week in literature, they will read Elie Wiesel’s acceptance speech for his Nobel Prize for Peace, which is located at the back of his book. Then, they will watch an interview with Elie Wiesel and Oprah Winfrey, when he returned with her, in his seventies, to the concentration camp at Auschwitz, Poland.

My Eighth Graders will also continue to work on their Career Projects.  To date, they have written up two career choices, their résumés, business letters, and questionnaires for their interviews.  They accomplished a lot of work with the help of their laptops.  This coming week, they will learn how to complete a job application.

In addition to this, we will return to our study of poetry, literary terms, and grammar.  We will also begin a review for “Finals,” which will be given from January 23 to January 25.

This week in Drama Class, we will work on blocking for our performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 7, in Wordly Wise, on Friday.
  • The next six SAT words for Friday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 7 of Wordly Wise for Friday.
  • Career 3 is due on Monday, January 9.

Reminders:

  • On Friday, January 6, I will send home large envelopes of all the work to date, from the Eighth Graders’ files.  Please sign the envelope, to assure me that you have received the work, and return the empty envelope to me, on Monday, January 9.  MANY THANKS!
  • The Annual Science Fair, will be held on Tuesday, January 10, from 1:15p.m. to 2:45p.m., in the Science Lab and Performing Arts room.
  • The First Friday Assembly is scheduled for Friday, January 13.
  • Monday, January 16, we will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day.  Therefore, no school.
  • Finals will be given from January 23 to January 25.
  • ECDS will host an Open House on Sunday, January 29, from 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m.
