Christmas Is Coming!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

Our WordPress blog will appear as a NEWS page in the Sycamore Portal, beginning on January 1, 2016.  Therefore, our WordPress blog will not be delivered directly to your cell phones or computers, as in the past, and to date.  You will have to “log in” to the Sycamore Portal for classroom information.  However, if you wish, you may purchase a Sycamore app. for your cell phone or visit the official website for access to the classroom news, homework assignments, due dates, and student grades.  I hope that this new method of communication will not be an inconvenience to you.♥

This week in literature, the Eighth Graders will continue to read Night by Elie Wiesel. They will finish it by the Christmas break.  Then, they will watch a documentary of Elie Wiesel, as he returns to Auschwitz, in his old age.  This past week, during our Literature on DVD, we continued to watch Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.  This week, we will finish watching Romeo and Juliet.

Our present writing assignment is the “Career Project.”  The first career summary is due on Monday, December 7.  This week in class, my Eighth Graders will learn how to write a basic Résumé.

Last week in history, my Eighth Graders finished reading the Twenty-Seven Amendments to The Constitution.  This week, they will start to write the Amendments in their own words, during class time.  After that assignment, they will join in pairs to write The Constitution in their own words.  This should guarantee that they will truly know and remember the information in this very important and well-written document.  In addition to this, they will start to read Chapter 5 of their history book, which focuses on “The Era of Thomas Jefferson.”

This week in our religious studies, my Eighth Graders will read about Church scandals and The Reformation.

1. Christmas is fast approaching and I must ask, once again, for help in providing food and Christmas gifts for our adopted family.  This week, your child will sign up for food and a gift for our designated family members.  I have asked my Eighth Graders to buy the gift from their own savings, if they truly want to give.  THANK YOU again for your gracious support!

2. On December 18, the last day of school before our Christmas break, we will have a Christmas party to celebrate.  Each student is asked to bring one item for the party. The Eighth Graders also want to have a Secret Santa gift exchange (a gift for $15). They were also asked to purchase this gift with their own savings.

3. My Eighth Graders will host the Mass in the chapel on Tuesday, December 8, in celebration of the Immaculate Conception.  Please remind your child to wear his/her Mass uniform. Thank you.  Mass begins at 11:00a.m.

4. The Sixth Graders will give a performance of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, on Monday, December 7, in St. Francis Hall, at 6:30p.m.  All are welcome to attend and support our wonderful Sixth Graders.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Career I is due on Monday, December 7.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 9 in Wordly Wise, on Friday, December 11.
  • SAT test on Friday, December 11.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 9 of Wordly Wise.
  • Study for the Literary Terms Test.
  • Rewrites of the Animal Farm paper will be due on Friday, December 11.

Always in our presentation, we must give something which does not exceed the child’s power, and yet, at the same time, calls forth effort.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead!
