School Dance!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

This past week, my Sixth Graders continued to learn how to write a formal outline, with respect to plot structure: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution/Conclusion.  In addition to this, they reviewed Literary Terms, and worked in their classroom workbooks for grammar, analogies, and journal.  Our books are finally in at Barnes and Noble.  I will pick them up on Monday, when I get a check from Mrs. King, and on Tuesday, we will commence reading Greek Gods and Heroes by Robert Graves.  I know that my Sixth Graders will enjoy reading about the gods on Mount Olympus.

The rewrites for the “Spooky Stories,” along with the colored illustrations, were due on Friday, November 13.  Some students didn’t meet the deadline, and therefore, need to turn in their colored illustrations and rewrites on Monday, November 16.  The outlines for Skellig will be due on Tuesday, November 24. I have asked my Sixth Graders to work on one section per night (five sections), to avoid a daunting assignment.  However, if they wait to do it the night before the due date, it will be too much work.  There will be no Wordly Wise due this week, in order to allow time to study for the History Test.

This week in history, the Sixth Graders will prepare for the next History Test, which will take place on Thursday, November 19.  Please encourage your child to study for this test.  Many Thanks.  In addition to this, we will watch a documentary about Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization (present day Iraq).

On Friday afternoon, the Sixth Graders rehearsed the most difficult scene in A Christmas Carol, the “Party Scene” and the first scene with “The Ghost of Christmas Future.” They did a great job and had a lot of fun.  I am so pleased with their progress.  Please remind them to study their cues and lines for the play.  I will give them a break from regular homework after Thanksgiving, in order to give them time to study their parts.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Late rewrites and illustrations for the “Spooky Stories” are due on Monday, November 16.
  • Study the history notes for the History Test of Chapter 3, on Thursday, November 19.
  • The Skellig outline is due on Tuesday, November 24.
  • Study your cues and lines for A Christmas Carol.

The School Dance will take place on Friday, November 20, from 6:30p.m. to 9:30p.m.  Admission is $5.  Each student who wishes to attend is asked to bring one item towards the Refreshment Booth, for example, a packet of cookies.  Two children can split the cost for a case of water or more expensive items etc.  If you are donating chips, we need the small individual packets of chips, please, as the large packets do not work.

I need more chaperones to volunteer to assist me and Mrs. King at the dance, to ensure the safety of our students and all other students who will attend the dance.  Please let me know as soon as possible. THANK YOU to Michelle and Gianna Acosta, and Laura and Michael Visco, who have already volunteered to chaperone our students on Friday evening.

All OMMS students, who are members of the Student Council, are required to remain after the dance for thirty minutes, to help clean up and set up the tables for Bingo, on Saturday.  Pick up time will be 10:00p.m. for those students.  Thank you.

Enjoy your weekend and have a grand week ahead.
