School Dance!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

Last week in literature, I commenced reading aloud, Night by Elie Wiesel, and my Eighth Graders are truly gripped by it.  Our books are finally in at Barnes and Noble, so I will pick them up on Monday, and my Eighth Graders will continue reading Night.  The next book for reading is The Odyssey, but unfortunately, Barnes and Noble doesn’t stock it, so I will have to ask you to order it on Amazon.  I will distribute a copy of the cover and the ISBN for this book on Monday.  My former students purchased this book for $2/3, plus S & H is $3.99.  Thank you.

I am moving the Literary Terms Test that was scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, to Monday, November 23, as my Eighth Graders have The Star/Renaissance Test on Thursday, and a History Test on Friday.  Too many tests in one week only boggles the mind.

This week in writing, my Eighth Graders will be given the instructions for their next writing assignment: The Career Project.  This is an in depth study and usually takes eighth weeks to complete.  My Eighth Graders will have to pick three careers of interest to them, that require college degrees.  Then, they will write a two-page summary (minimum) of each chosen career, during a period of three weeks.  In addition to this, they will have to research the three best schools for each career, the GPA required to attend these schools, tuition, other fees, and accommodation.   In class, they will learn how to write a resume, business letters, questionnaires for interviews, and how to fill in a job application.  They will have to interview a professional from each of their chosen careers.  This may be done by phone, email, or in person (accompanied by a parent).  They will also have to decide where they think they want to live in the future.  They will research their dream house, cost, etc. and decide which of their chosen careers will afford them the house of their dreams.  It is a fun project, and many of my former Eighth Graders have gone on to qualify and work in one of their chosen careers that they researched for this project.  Please encourage your child/children to do a good job on this project, as it is a very valuable life lesson.

Last week in history, my Eighth Graders finished reading The Constitution.  This week, they will read the Twenty-Seven Amendments to The Constitution. I am happy to report that the majority of the class scored A/A+’s on their History Test of Chapter 3, Part 1.  Well done, Eighth Graders!  Keep up the great work.  Part 2 of this test, which encompasses important definitions from The Constitution, will be given on Friday, November 20.  There will be no Wordly Wise homework due this week, in order to allow my students to study for this important test.  We will prepare for this test in class, on Monday and Tuesday.

This week, our religious studies will encompass The Magisterium and the early Christian Empire.

My Eighth Graders have created and signed up to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for a family in need.  Please donate any perishable items on Tuesday, November 24, for example the turkey, a pumpkin pie, rolls etc.  THANK YOU for your generosity.  This is a good lesson for my Eighth Graders.

The annual School Dance will take place on Friday, in the St. Francis Hall, from 6:30p.m. to 9:30p.m.  Admission is $5.  Each student who wishes to attend is asked to donate one item for the Refreshment Booth, for example, a packet of cookies.  Two students may split the cost of a case of water etc.  If you want to donate chips, please donate the small individual sized packets, as the large packets do not work.  Thank you!

I need more chaperones to volunteer to assist me and Mrs. King at the dance, to ensure the safety of our students and all other students who will attend the dance.  Please let me know as soon as possible, if you are willing to chaperone.  THANK YOU to Michelle and Gianna Acosta and Laura and Michael Visco, who have already volunteered to chaperone our students on Friday evening.

All OMMS students, who are members of the Student Council or are in Eighth Grade, are required to remain after the dance to help with the clean up and the set up for Bingo, on Saturday.  Pick-up time is 10:00p.m. for all my Eighth Graders.

The homework for this week is as follows:.

  • Study for the History Test, on Friday, November 20.
  • Study for the Literary Terms Test, on Monday, November 23.
