Happy Veterans’ Day!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all the parents who attended our Parent/Teacher conferences on Friday.   It was lovely to meet and chat with you about your children’s academic and social progress.  Thank You!

Last week in literature, my Eighth Graders commenced the reading of Night by Elie Wiesel.  It is the story of a Jewish man and his son’s journey through several concentration camps, during the Holocaust of World War II.  It is a heart-wrenching story that always evokes compassion in my students.  Last Friday, we started watching Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.  We will resume watching it on Friday, as my Eighth Graders appear to be enjoying it.  Their next writing assignment, “What I Learned By Reading Animal Farm by George Orwell,” is due on Friday, November 13.  Please encourage your child/children to meet the deadline, as they have had plenty of time for this homework assignment.  There will be a Literary Terms test on Wednesday, November 18, it is not too early to start reviewing the terms.

This week in history, my Eighth Graders will continue to read The Constitution of the United States.  On Friday, November 13, they will have a History Test of Chapter 3 of our history book America.  This week, there will be no Wordly Wise homework, in order to give my students time to study.  Please encourage your child/children to study for this test.  Many thanks!

This past week in religion, the Eighth Graders read about how the Church was strengthened by her Councils.  This coming week, they will read about monastic life and Charlemagne’s influence on Christianity.

The first quarter for in-class testing, homework, and grading of academic ended on Friday, November 6.  The second quarter begins on Monday, November 9.

The Renaissance Testing will take place for the Eighth Graders, on Thursday, November 12, at 9:00a.m. – 10:00a.m., and on Thursday, November 19, at 9:00a.m. – 10:00a.m.  Please make sure that your child/children go to bed early the night before the testing, as a tired child usually doesn’t perform well on tests.

Our annual School Dance for the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Graders will take place on Friday, November 20.  It will be held in the St. Francis Hall, from 6:30p.m. to 9:30p.m.  Admission is $5.  In addition to this, each student was asked to donate one item for the Refreshment Stand, for example, cookies, soda, water, etc.  I will need chaperones to guarantee the safety of our students, during the dance.  If you are available to chaperone, please contact me A.S.A.P.  Many thanks!  The Eighth Graders will be required to remain after the dance, to clean up and to help set up the tables for Bingo.

The homework for this coming week is as follows:

  • Study for the History Test of Chapter 3, on Friday, November 13.
  • Animal Farm paper is due on Friday, November 13.
  • Study for the Literary Terms Test on Wednesday, November 18.

The words that enlighten the soul are more precious than jewels.
