A Great Start, 8th Graders!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all the parents who attended our school assembly last Monday.  It was lovely to see so much support for our Eighth Graders, the senior role models for O.M.M.S.

CONGRATULATIONS to my Eighth Graders, who helped to set up and participated in the Peace Assembly on Friday.  You did a GREAT JOB!  I am very proud of  you!

We are off to a great start…despite the oppressive heat.  I am happy to report that all my Eighth Graders scored extremely high on their spelling/vocabulary test today (Friday).  Keep up the great work, Eighth Graders!

This past week, we continued to read Animal Farm by George Orwell.  In addition to this, the Eighth Graders began work in their grammar workbooks.  They also watched the first episode of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, which they enjoyed.  They will learn about summaries on Monday, and their first summary of Pride and Prejudice will be due on Friday, September 18.

This week, my Eighth Graders will continue their reading of Chapter 1 of their history book America, which focuses on the roots of democratic government, the age of exploration, commerce and the colonies, and the thirteen English colonies.

During our religious studies, we read about and discussed free will, mortal sin versus venial sin, and character from a Catholic standpoint.

  • The applications for the Student Council will be available in the office, on Monday, September 14, and should be returned to the office on Friday, September 18.  The Campaign Week will commence on Monday, September 21, and end on Friday, September 25.  Speeches will be given at the assembly, on Monday, September 21, and voting will take place on the Friday, September 26.  All parents are invited to attend the assembly to kick off Campaign Week, which will be held in the St. Francis Hall.
  • The PTG General Meeting has been moved from Wednesday, September 16 to Wednesday, September 23.  It will be held in the St. Francis Hall, at 6:30p.m.  Please mark your calendars.
  • Laura Visco and Cheri Bell have agreed to be our Homeroom Moms, with Jane Morse as their assistant.  YAHOO!  Thank you, Laura, Cheri, and Jane!  I look forward to working with you this year.  I know that we will have a blast!

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 2 in Wordly Wise on Friday, September 18.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 2 of Wordly Wise for Friday.
  • Write up and study the history definitions from Chapter 1 of America, and study for the test.
  • Write a summary of Episode 1 of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a GRAND week ahead.
