Welcome Back to School 8th Graders!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all the parents who attended our Orientation/Back to School Night, last Wednesday evening.  It was lovely to see you, and chat with you all again.  This  year, your child is a role model and will be a graduate of our school, next June, 2016.  I am happy to report that my Eighth Grade class have completed a GRAND first week of school, and I know that they will be great examples of excellence and role-models for their peers.  They appear to be very happy to have reached this milestone in their education.  I trust that they will remain enthusiastic and focused on their academics for the rest of this school year.

THANK YOU also to Cheri Bell and to those parents who provided the teachers with Starbucks coffee and treats, on Wednesday morning.  It was very thoughtful of you.

This past week, my Eighth Graders commenced the reading of Animal Farm by George Orwell, and they appear to be enjoying it.  It is a fairy tale about animals who rebel against their cruel farmer, and an allegory about the Russian Revolution (1917).  They also started Lesson 1 of Wordly Wise in class, under my supervision.  They will finish this lesson in class, so that I am sure they understand the expectations of this homework workbook.

This week, my Eighth Graders will watch the first episode of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, in preparation for writing summaries. During writing class,  they will work on how to write a good summary.

This coming week, my Eighth Graders will commence reading Chapter 1 of their history book, America.  They will watch history documentaries in order to bring the history to life.

Religion instruction will also commence on Tuesday.  The text book is Sadlier’s We Believe series…We Live Our Faith.

  • There will be a School Assembly on Tuesday, September 8, in the Serra Center at 10:00a.m.  During the assembly, our Eighth Grade students will be recognized as the seniors and mentors of O.M.M.S.  All parents are welcome to attend.
  • There will be a Peace Assembly on Friday, September 11, in commemoration of 9/11.  It will take place on the front lawn.

I look forward to a very positive and productive school year with your teenagers.

CONGRATULATIONS to my Eighth Graders on the excellent readings and participation at our first school Mass, last Friday.  I am so proud of you already…and it is only the beginning of the school year!♥

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Study the spelling/vocabulary in Lesson 1 in Wordly Wise, for the test on Friday.
  • Write up the history definitions and questions into your history notebooks.
  • Read several chapters of a book of choice.  Please remember that reading is food for the brain.

A teacher never stops striking the heartstrings of a student’s heart until the harmonies of knowledge blend with the melody of faith to perform the symphony of understanding. ~ Maria Montessori

Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day weekend and have a GRAND week ahead!
