Welcome Back to School 6th Graders!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

Welcome to my blog!  Thank you to all the parents who attended Orientation Night last Wednesday evening.  It was lovely to meet and chat with you.  Your children appear to have enjoyed their first week back to school, although, it was too short and moved too fast.  My Sixth Graders are all very sweet and attentive, and I trust that they will work hard, learn a lot, and enjoy this new school year very much.

This past week, the Sixth Graders began their reading of Skellig by David Almond, and it was obvious that they were enjoying it.  Yahoo!  We will continue to read this book in class.  This coming week, I will read many of Aesop’s fables aloud to my students, in preparation for the first writing assignment, “Write a Fable.”  This way, my Sixth Graders will truly grasp the concept and format for writing a fable.  In addition to this, they will start their journal writing. They will also work on Lesson 1 of their Wordly Wise workbook in class, under my supervision, so that they fully understand the expectations.  They will complete Lesson 1 in class, so, please make sure  that your child brings his/her Wordly Wise workbook to school each day.  The first Spelling/Vocabulary Test will be given on Thursday, September 10.  Please encourage your child to study for this test every night for about thirty minutes.  Thank you.

The Sixth Graders will commence Social Studies on Tuesday, September 8.  I look forward to a very positive and productive school year with your children.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Study the spelling and definitions in Lesson 1 of Wordly Wise, for the Vocabulary Test on Thursday, September 10.
  • Read several chapters of a book of choice at home, as reading is food for the brain.

  • There will be a School Assembly on Tuesday, September 8, to recognize the Eighth Grade mentors.
  • There will be a Peace Assembly on Friday, September 11, to commemorate 9/11.
