Happy Valentine’s Day!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

As you already know, next Saturday is St. Valentine’s Day, so Happy St. Valentine’s Day! I hope that you all have a wonderful day with your spouses, partners, and beloved children.  The remains of St. Valentine, the patron saint of love, lie in Whitefriar Street Church, in Dublin, Ireland.

This past week, my Eighth Graders took the NAEP test on Tuesday.  There were two examiners, and they both stated that they were very impressed with my Eighth Graders’ good behavior and polite manners.  Well done, Eighth Graders!  I am so proud of you!

This week in literature, my Eighth Graders will continue to read The Odyssey. They appear to be enjoying this book very much.  In addition to this, we will return to the study of Edgar Allan Poe.  Please remind your child to bring a job application and a college application, so they can complete them in class, under my supervision, as part of their Career Projects. Thank you.

February is “Black History Month.”  Therefore, last week, my Eighth Graders watched a biography of the life of Rosa Parks, whose brave action on a Montgomery bus, gave rise to The Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s.  This week in history, my Eighth Graders  will continue to write the Twenty-Seven Amendments to The Constitution.  This coming week, they will continue their study of “Black History.”  In addition to this, they will start to read Chapter 5 of their history book, which focuses on the Era of Thomas Jefferson.

The Eighth Graders took the Acre Test last Thursday.  Overall, they felt that it was an easy test, and most of them completed it in one hour.  They will start Family Life on Monday.  On Wednesday, the Eighth Graders will have a visit from John Haggerty, at 9:00 a.m., who will show a short DVD, regarding vocations in the Priesthood and the Sisterhood.  Then, he will explain the Serra Essay Contest, which is an annual contest for Eighth Graders in Catholic Schools, in San Diego County.

1. My Eighth Graders will have a St. Valentine’s Day celebration on Friday, February 13.  They may bring treats to share with the class.

2. The EGG/BABY experiment will start on Tuesday, February 17.  My Eighth Graders will have to carry an unboiled egg around with them, everywhere they go for the duration of a week.  The lesson behind this experiment, is to bring home to my students, what it is like to have a baby, and to care for it 24/7.

3. The first Graduation meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25, in Room 218, at 6:00p.m.  I hope to see you all then.

4. Please order your Yearbooks 2015 soon, in order to avoid disappointment.

The homework for this week is as follow

  • Rewrites of Careers 1 and 2 are due on Monday, February 9.
  • Dream House for the Career Project is due on Monday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 13 in Wordly Wise on Friday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 13 of Wordly Wise.
  • Write up the history definitions in Chapter 5.
