Catholic Schools’ Week!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

We are asking all our families to join us on Sunday morning, January 25, at 10;00a.m., in the Serra Center, for our annual Mass celebration, in honor of Catholic Schools’ Week. We are very proud of our school, students, parents, principal/administrator, faculty, and staff.  This week at O.M.M.S., we will start our Catholic Schools’ Week with a school assembly in the Serra Center, on Monday, at 10:00 a.m.  THANK YOU to all the P.T.G. parents for your planning, time, and help in making Sunday and this week a special celebration.

This past week in literature, my Eighth Graders commenced their reading of The Odyssey, which is about King Odysseus’s ten year long adventurous journey home to his beloved wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus.  This past week, during our reading, Odysseus encountered, the Lotus Eaters; Polyphemus, the Cyclops; the giant Laestrygonians; Aeolus, the keeper of the winds; Circe, the enchantress; and the bewitching Sirens.  He also journeyed to Hades, the land of the dead, where he met his mother, Anticleia, and many of his friends who died during The Trojan War.

In addition to this, my Eighth Graders will continue to write their novellas and work on their Career Project.  There will be a Literary Terms Test, on Thursday, January 29, so please encourage your child to study for it.  Thank you.

I am happy to report that 85% of my Eighth Graders scored A+’s/A on the History Test, last Thursday.  Well done, Eighth Graders!  This week in history, my Eighth Graders will finish Chapter 4, which is equal to three chapters in length, because it focuses on The Constitution and The Amendments.   In addition to this, they will continue to write the Twenty-Seven Amendments in their own words.

This week in religion, we will continue to prepare for the Acre Tests, which will be given on February 5.  We will also continue reading from the text book, We Believe.

On Friday, we continued our rehearsal for The Passion, which will take place on Good Friday at noon, in the Serra Center.

Reminders :

1. Please return the permission slip for Family Life.  Thank You, to those who turned it in this past week.

2. You will receive the “Report Cards” this week.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding my subjects, please do not hesitate to contact me.

3. You should have received a letter from your Eighth Grader on Friday, regarding the upcoming National Assessment of Educational Progress (N.A.E.P.).  This test is scheduled for Tuesday, February 3.  It will take 90 minutes.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study for the Literary Terms Test, on Thursday, January 29.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 12 in Wordly Wise for Friday.
  • Study the SAT words for Friday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 12 of Wordly Wise.
  • Career 3 of the Career Project is due on Friday, January 30.
