ITBS Testing Week!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

ITBS Testing will commence on Monday, October 13.  Your child will test for one hour each day.  Please ensure that he/she gets plenty of sleep each night before testing, as this will enhance his/her performance.  A tired child will not test well.  A good breakfast will help with your child’s concentration, too.  A hungry child will not test well.  Please assure your child that these tests are just part of the educational system, and there is no need to worry, but he/she should try to do one’s best.

The Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Monday, October 27, and on Friday, November 7.  You should have received a flyer about them today.  The “Sign-Up” sheets will be at the top of the stairs, on the right hand side, on Monday, October 13. The conferences will be held in Room 218.  We look forward to meeting with you.

This past week, the Sixth Graders continued their reading of Skellig by David Almond.  In addition to this, they also continued their study of narrative poetry with “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes.  We will read more narrative poems for several weeks, before I assign a narrative poem for homework.  The next writing assignment will be “Write a Spooky Story.” I will distribute and discuss the guidelines for it next week. This week, I will read several spooky stories aloud in class.   The majority of the Sixth Graders are scoring high on their weekly homework.  Keep up the great work, Sixth Graders!

We are finished reading Chapter 2 of the history book, which encompassed early agriculture, cities, civilizations, and the Maya civilization, in particular.  Next week, we will prepare for the next History Test, yet to be assigned.

Today, we had rehearsals for A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.  My Sixth Graders are starting to really enjoy the acting process.  Several of our alumni returned to O.M.M.S. this afternoon, and helped my students with their rehearsals.  A great time was had by all!  THANK YOU Diana, Lauren, Antonio, and Mateo.  You did a GRAND JOB!  I am so proud of you!

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 5 in Wordly Wise for Wednesday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 5 of Wordly Wise.
  • Rewrites of the fables and a colored  illustration are due on Wednesday, October 15.
  • Write up the history definitions from Chapter 2 of Ancient Civilizations.

Enjoy your weekend and have a grand week ahead!

Cheers,

Miss Susan
