Welcome Back to School! ~ Middle School

Dear Middle School Parents and Students,

WELCOME BACK to our new school year!  I hope that you all have had a wonderful summer and that you are excited about returning to school.  I am eager to see my students, and to welcome my new students.  I will have your son/daughter for Language Arts, Social Studies, Drama, Communications, and the History of Art.  The Eighth Grade class is my homeroom, therefore, I will also have them for Religious Instruction and discussion.

Orientation/Back to School Night is scheduled for September 2, from 6:45p.m. to 7:45p.m.  Please attend if possible, as you will have an opportunity to visit each classroom, meet the three Middle School teachers, receive a detailed overview of each curriculum; homework policies, assignments, and projects; the grading system; parent/teacher communication; and our weekly blog.  Orientation/Back to School Night is a great opportunity for you to ask questions.  Please take time to read the overview, and you will be well informed of the goals and expectations that are set for your child for the Middle School years.

In November, we (the Middle Schoolteachers), will be implementing a new web-based system, called Edmodo, to facilitate our classroom management, educational resources, and communication with our parents and students.  Therefore, until then, we will continue to blog each week, in order to keep you well informed and up to date with your child’s homework assignments, etc.

On the first day back to school, your son/daughter will receive a list regarding the English Literature that we will read and study this year.   Your child will begin his/her reading of literature with novellas, as I wish to review the process of plot analysis, with respect to: Exposition (Introduction), Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action/Resolution, and Conclusion.  In addition to this, during September, I will focus on the writing of fables with my Sixth Graders, myths/legends with my Seventh Graders, and fairy tales with my Eighth Graders.

This month, our poetry study will begin with narrative poetry.  Your child will be given an assignment to write a narrative poem, once we complete the study.  We will continue to explore all forms of poetry throughout the school year, because it nourishes our creative spirits and delves deeply into our emotions.

Text books are provided by O.M.M.S. for Social Studies.  The Sixth Graders will study Ancient Civilizations; the Seventh Graders will study Medieval Times and the Renaissance; and the Eighth Graders will study the history of the United States.

Each grade in Middle School will have a Drama class with me, which will end with a performance in the St. Francis Hall (6th and 7th Grades), and the Serra Center (8th Grade).

Communications and History of Art will commence in November.  As the year progresses, we will intertwine “The Arts” more with Literature, Social Studies, and Drama, as this elevates my students’ level of thinking and awareness to a higher plane and level of intelligence.

Text books are also provided for Religion for all the Middle School classes.  We will read the We Believe series by Sadlier.

I trust that this school year will be a happy and productive experience in the education of your child, and that it will motivate, educate, thrill, and inspire him/her to do one’s best and to grow spiritually, academically, personally,  and emotionally.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak with me at the Orientation.

It is necessary to give children the possibility of developing according to the laws of their nature, so that they can become strong, and having become strong, can do even more than we dared to hope for them. ~ Maria Montessori

Once again, I look forward to seeing all my former students and their parents, and I welcome all my new students and their parents, too.  Let’s make it a GRAND YEAR!

Sincerely,

Miss Susan
