Happy Memorial Day!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

Last week’s Spirit Week was a lot of fun, especially, with the culmination of our Sports Day on Friday.  THANK YOU to all our parents who donated food and their free time to serve lunch, in order to make Sports Day so special for our students.  A GRAND TIME was had by all!  FUN! LAUGHTER! DANCING!  A special THANK YOU to Ms. Saundra and the Boone family, who organized the event, to Mr. Joey Betancourt, who played all the great music, and to Mr. Tom Satterfield, who was our wonderful M.C.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to BRENDAN HALLE (Noelle’s dad), who visited our classroom last Thursday, to explain the job of a fireman.  Mr. Halle is a Captain with the Fire Department in Vista, and he gave a very interesting talk about the education, training, and the job of a fireman.  In addition to this, he brought in two fireman outfits plus headgear, and some of our Eighth Graders (Antonio, Mateo, Noelle, and Theresa) tried on the heavy gear that fireman have to wear while on duty.  A GOOD TIME was had by all.  THANK YOU!

The school year is very quickly coming to an end, and we are almost finished our curriculum.  So, hang in there, Eighth Graders!  This week in literature, my Eighth Graders will focus on their notes for The Odyssey. They will also finish watching the movie of The Odyssey, which truly brings the book to life.  They will work on finishing their classroom workbooks this week and next week.  In addition to this, they will review the Cornell Note-Taking System, and they will prepare for Speech Night.  Your child’s work from his/her file will go home at the end of the first week in June.

This week in history, the Eighth Graders will watch a history documentary of all the major events of the twentieth century.  The last History Test of this school year is scheduled for Friday, May 30.

This week in religion, my Eighth Graders will continue to read from their text book, We Live Our Faith.  Then, we will have a discussion.

  • Mr. John Haggerty will visit my Eighth Graders on Wednesday morning, to announce the results of the Serra Essays.
  • The Jazz Dance Recital is scheduled for Thursday, May 29, in the St. Francis Hall, at 1:30 p.m.  All are welcome to attend.
  • The Crowning of Mary is scheduled for Friday, May 30, directly after Mass.  All are welcome to attend.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Rewrites of speeches are due on Tuesday, May 27.
  • Please practice your speech for Speech Night, on Wednesday, June 4.
  • Turn in any rewrites that are past due.

Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world. ~ Maria Montessori

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and have a very Happy Memorial Day with your families.
