May Madness!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

The school year is marching onwards at a fast pace, and my Eighth Graders can see the beach calling out to them.  This is normal behavior for this time of the school year.  However, they still have much to cover by the end of May.  Some of my students are slacking off by not studying for tests, not meeting deadlines, and not doing their homework.  This is not acceptable, as very quickly, an A+ student can become a B student or lower, by the end of this month.  Please encourage your teenager to study and work hard this month.  My grade book closes on May 31.  Then, FREEDOM!

This week in literature, my Eighth Graders will continue reading The Odyssey.  Odysseus has returned home to Ithaca, but there are 108 suitors living in his palace.  Now, he must devise a way to take back his kingdom.

I have decided to spread out the rest of the presentations of “Big Ideas,” as they are taking longer than anticipated, so we will have two presentations per week until all my students have presented their work.  We are almost finished the preparation for speech writing.  Most of my Eighth Graders are making good progress in their grammar books.  Well done, Eighth Graders!

There will be a History Test of Chapter 7 on Thursday, May 8.  Please encourage your teenager to study for it.  Many thanks!  This week in history, we will read Chapter 8 of the history book, which concentrates on The Age of Reform, and includes: “Improving Society, The Fight Against Slavery, A Call for Women’s Rights, and American Literature and the Arts.”

We will finish Family Life this week.  The last chapter is titled “Growing in Christ.”  We will discuss the meaning of life and their futures.

Reminder:

The annual Variety Show will take place on Thursday, May 8, in the Serra Center, at 6:30 p.m.  All are welcome to attend.  Several of my Eighth Graders have agreed to help with it.

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Study the history notes for the History Test on Thursday.
  • Review spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 5 in Wordly Wise on Friday.
  • SAT spelling/vocabulary test on Friday.
  • The next pages, as marked in your grammar book.
  • Work on your speech.

The Child is truly a miraculous being, and this should be felt deeply by the educator.  ~ Dr. Maria Montessori

Enjoy your weekend and have a GRAND week ahead.

Cheers,

Miss Susan
