Successful School Dance!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

I apologize for this late blog.  However, I had the School Dance on Friday evening, and worked long days and evenings, on Saturday and Sunday in order to finish the Yearbook 2014.  Hence, the delay.

Our Middle School dance was a GRAND success last Friday evening!  All who attended clearly had a blast!  A big THANK YOU to Joey Betancourt (Julian’s dad), who was our D.J.  He played great music which our students thoroughly enjoyed and danced to all evening. THANK YOU to all our Student Council members and to Nicole Halle and Denise Marquez, who did a GREAT job in decorating the St. Francis Hall for the dance. THANK YOU to Gianna Acosta, Dakota Bobadilla, Sierra Shebest, and Valentina Osorio, who worked at the door at the beginning of the dance.  THANK YOU to Michelle Acosta, Jud Fidellow, and Jane Morse, who ran the Refreshment Booth. THANK YOU to Nicki Nugent, who donated a giant bag of popcorn for everyone.  THANK YOU to Jennifer Powell, who ran the Photo Booth.  THANK YOU to our chaperons: Joe Davies, Carmela Escobar, Mrs. Wanda King, John McKean, Mr. Osorio, and our beautiful alumnus, Diana Visco.  THANK YOU to all our parents, who generously donated chips, cookies, drinks, ice, and various  types of snacks.  THANK YOU to  all the students and parents who helped with the cleanup.  THANK YOU to Cynthia Gilbertson, who donated a cooler to the Student Council for our future dances.  THANK YOU to the Marquez family who donated the popcorn maker for the raffle.  A very special THANK YOU to our Student Council President and Vice President, Katie Nugent and Lea Marquez, who meticulously organized the flyer, music, decorations, refreshments, awards, and raffle for the dance.  GREAT JOB!  I am so proud of you!  As you can see, it takes a village to put on a Middle School dance!

This week in literature, the Eighth Graders will continue to read The Odyssey.  They will become more acquainted with Telemachus, the son of Odysseus.  In addition to this, they will work with their laptops on their project about “Big Ideas.” I will also assign the next Literary Terms Test.

I am very happy to report that most of the Eighth Graders scored A/A+’s on the History Test last Thursday.  Well done! Keep up the great work!  This week in history, the Eighth Graders will finish reading Chapter 6, which focuses on democracy in action and the removal of the Native American Indians.  In addition to this, we will watch videos on the Smart Board that will enhance our history study.

Our Family Life study will introduce my Eighth Graders to “The Dating Game,” and we will discuss relationship rules.  We will also read about “Marriage and the Family,” which will be followed by a discussion.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Review spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 3 in Wordly Wise.
  • SAT spelling and definitions.
  • Write up the history definitions from Chapter 6 into your history notebook.
  • Some students still need to turn in their Sources Consulted for the Career Project.
