School Dance on Friday!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

A big THANK YOU to all our parents, grandparents, and friends who attended Maria Montessori/Shadow Day on Friday.  Your teenagers truly love having you in the classroom with them.  Although forty minutes in each Middle School classroom is very short, and can only give you a glimpse into their daily work; I hope that you enjoyed their presentations.  Your attendance was very much appreciated.  Many thanks! CONGRATULATIONS to all my Eighth Graders who did an excellent job in giving your presentations.  I am so proud of you!

This week in literature, the Eighth Graders will continue to follow Odysseus in his attempt to return home to his kingdom in Ithaca. In addition to this, they will start a new project using their laptops.   They will also return to the study of Literary Terms.

This week in history the Eighth Graders will prepare for the History Test on Thursday, March 27.  Please encourage your teenager to study for this test.  Many thanks!  In addition to this, they will finish reading Chapter 6, which focuses on “Dealing With Other Nations” and “The Age of Jackson.”

Last week in Family Life, the Eighth Graders learned about anorexia and AIDS.  This week, the concentration will be on the avoidance of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.  This chapter also covers emotional and spiritual health.

Our annual School Dance will take place in St. Francis Hall, on Friday, March 28.  It will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m. However, all the Eighth Graders who attend will be asked to help clean up after the dance and put the hall back in order for Bingo.  This usually takes thirty minutes.  The theme for our dance is “Hollywood and the Movies.”  Admission is $5. In addition to this, each student is asked to donate $1 towards the decorations and to bring one item for refreshments, for example, chips, cookies, water, etc.  THANK YOU to Mr. Joey Betancourt who has agreed to be our D.J. for the event.  I will need chaperons to help supervise our students.  If you are available to help on Friday evening, please contact me this week.  Many thanks!

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study for your History Test on Thursday, March 27.
  • Review spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 2 in Wordly Wise, on Friday.
  • Sources Consulted for your Career Project.
  • Some students still owe the last section of the Career Project.
  • Any rewrites that are overdue for the Career Project.
  • Work on your new project.

The child can develop fully by means of experiences in his environment.  We call such experiences ‘work.’  ~ Maria Montessori

Enjoy your weekend and have a grand week ahead.
