It’s Super Bowl Weekend!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

Happy Super Bowl Weekend!  I hope that you all will enjoy the Super Bowl on Sunday, and may the best team win.

This past week in literature the Eighth Graders read Elie’s Wiesel’s acceptance speech for his Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.  In addition to this, they read a biography of Edgar Allan Poe.  They also read and analyzed “The Raven,” and watched an animated version of it on the Smart Board.  This coming week, they will write their own version of “The Raven.”  In addition to this, the Eighth Graders will read and watch an animated version of Poe’s short story “The Black Cat.”

Some students still need to order The Odyssey, Retold by Barbara Leonie Picard – Oxford Press – ISBN 978-0-19-275075-4. We will begin reading it on Monday, February 10.  It is the best version for Middle School students, and it will help them greatly in high school when they read and study it, no matter what version they may have to read.  THANK YOU!

This past week in history, the Eighth Graders spent much of their history period, writing the Twenty-Seven Amendments to The Constitution, in their own words.  They will finish this exercise on Monday.  They also read about the launching of a new nation. This week, they will read about the birth of political parties and John Adams. Next week, the Eighth Graders will begin to write The Constitution, in their own words. I will allow them to work in partners for this exercise.

This week in religion, the Eighth Graders will prepare for the Acre Test on Monday, and they will take the test on Tuesday, February 4.  In addition to this, they will start Family Life on Wednesday.  THANK YOU for returning the permission slips.

Reminders: 1. It is time again to order the Yearbook 2014.  The cost is $45.  We have ordered 115 copies, so first come, first served. Order forms are available in the school office.  If you have photographs from this school year, that you would like included in the Yearbook 2014, please send them in to me on a disc or on a USB. Many thanks!

2. The Eighth Graders will participate in an “EGG/BABY” experiment this coming week. They have to take an egg with them, wherever they go for 24/7.  The idea behind this experiment is to give them an idea of what it is like to be responsible for the welfare, care, and safety of an EGG/BABY.  It is expected that none of the EGGS/BABIES will break/die during the week.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Rewrites of three resumes are due on Monday.
  • Rewrites of business letters are due on Friday.
  • Career 3 of the Career Project is due on Friday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 17 in Wordly Wise.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 17 of Wordly Wise.

Life-transforming ideas have always come to me through books.

Have a SUPER weekend, and have a GRAND week ahead.
