Catholic Schools’ Week!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all the families who joined us today for our Mass celebration, in honor of Catholic Schools’ Week.  We are very proud of our school, students, parents, administrator, faculty, and staff.  This week at O.M.M.S., we will start our Catholic Schools Week with a school assembly in the Serra Center, on Monday, at 10:30 a.m.  THANK YOU to all the P.T.G. parents for your planning, time, and help in making today and this week special.

This week in literature, the Eighth Graders will discuss and analyze Night by Elie Wiesel.  Then, they will write a reaction to what they saw in the historical footage of Auschwitz and the interview between Elie Wiesel and Oprah Winfry.  The next book on our list for rreading is Homer’s, The Odyssey.  Unfortunately, the translation that we read in class is unavailable at Barnes and Noble.  Therefore, my Eighth Graders can either borrow it from last year’s alumni or order it on Amazon.  If ordering on Amazon, please order:  The Odyssey, Retold by Barbara Leonie Picard – Oxford University Press – ISBN 978-0-19-275075-4.  If time permits, they will also work on Career 3 with their laptops and with the class computers.

This week in history, the Eighth Graders will start to read Chapter 5 of their history book, which concentrates on Thomas Jefferson, as president.  On Wednesday, they will have an open book History Test, whereby, they will condense the Twenty-Seven Amendments into one to three sentences.  This will also be an exercise in finding the main point, and it will help them to remember the amendments to The Constitution.

This week in religion, we will continue to prepare for the Acre Tests, which will be given on February 4.  On Friday, we began our rehearsal for The Passion, which will take place on Good Friday at noon, in the Serra Center.

Reminders :

1. Please return the permission slip for Family Life.  Thank You, if you have already done so.

2. You will receive the “Report Cards” this week.  If you have any questions or concerns about it, please do not hesitate to contact me, or my co-workers, Ms. Lida and Ms. Lisa.

3. Please order the book, The Odyssey…Retold by Barbara Leonie Picard (details above).  Many thanks!

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Review the Twenty-Seven Amendments for the History Test on Wednesday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 16 in Wordly Wise for Friday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 16 of Wordly Wise.
  • Career 3 of the Career Project is due on Friday.

Memory is the mother of all wisdom.  ~ Aeschylus

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead.
