Happy New Year!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

Happy New Year!  I hope that this new year will bring you all much love, happiness, smiles, laughter, success, good health, and surprises on a daily basis.  I trust that you all had a wonderful Christmas with your families.  Your children returned to school happy and rested.  They definitely enjoyed their Christmas break, as per “Share Time” last Monday.  We have just begun a new year in the education of your children. We have a lot of new and exciting work to study, learn, research, ponder, explore, and discuss before June, 2014.

THANK YOU once again for all the great gifts that you showered upon me and my co-workers for Christmas.  We are indeed blessed to have such thoughtful and generous parents.  A very special THANK YOU to my homeroom Mom, Cheri Bell, and  to Mary Rudick and her team of parents who helped with the gingerbread houses.

This past week in literature, the Sixth Graders read about “The Giants’ Rebellion” and “Two Other Rebellions.”  This coming week, they will read about “Jason and the Golden Fleece” and “Alcestis.”  In class, they focused on analogies, grammar, and journal writing. This week, they will write a short Stage Play with me, in preparation for their next writing assignment, “Write a Stage Play.” In addition to this, we will return to our study of Literary Terms and Literature on DVD.

I am so proud of my Sixth Graders! This past week, 90% of the class achieved the grade A+ on their Wordly Wise homework, and  90% received the grades A/A+ on their spelling/vocabulary test.  Their memorization skills are developing nicely.  Well done, Sixth Graders!

I have moved the History Test that was scheduled for Thursday, January 16, to Thursday, January 23, as my Sixth Graders informed me that they have a Science Test on Tuesday, January 14.  Three tests in one week is too much for them at the moment. This week in history, we will prepare for the History Test, Part 1.  They will be tested on Sections 1, 2, and 3 of Chapter 4.  The following Thursday, January 30, they will be tested on Part 2, Sections 4 and 5 of Chapter 4.  If time permits, we will commence reading Chapter 5 of the history book, which concentrates on the origins of Judaism.

The homework for this coming week is as follows:

  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 13 in Wordly Wise for Wednesday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 13 of Wordly Wise for Wednesday,
  • Study two history definitions or questions per night, in preparation for the History Test.
  • Think about your plot/story for your Stage Play.

Reminder: If you have any questions or concerns about the results of the ITBS Testing, please do not hesitate to contact me and my co-workers, Ms. Lida and Ms. Lisa.

On Wednesday, I will send home large envelopes of all the work to date, from the Sixth Graders’ files.  Please sign the envelope, to assure me that you have received the work, and return it to me on Thursday.  MANY THANKS!
