Willy Wonka Play!

Dear Seventh Grade Parents and Students,

We will be taking our first field trip on Wednesday, November 20, to see the play Willy Wonka at the Star Theater, in Oceanside.  Jenna and Lauren Bell have parts in this show, so we are truly looking forward to seeing and supporting their performances.  The play begins at 9:00A.M., so we intend to depart from O.M.M.S. at 8:15A.M.  Please ensure that your child arrives to school on time on Wednesday.  Many thanks!

This week in literature, we will continue to read Inside the Walls of Troy by Clemence McLaren.  In addition to this, we will return to our Literary Terms.  Reminder: Those who failed the last Literary Terms Test will be given an opportunity to retake the test on Tuesday, November 19.  Please encourage your child to study for this test, if he/she will be taking the “retake test.”

The Seventh Graders are almost finished watching Silas Marner by George Eliot, for our literature on DVD.  It is the story of a man who loses his best friend and fiancee through lies.  Hence, he becomes a recluse and a miser, who hoards all the gold he makes from his weaving.  One night, his gold is stolen, but it is later replaced by a beautiful little orphan girl, who teaches him the true value of love and family.  Next, the Seventh Graders will watch To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, in preparation for their screenplay, as the camera angles in this film are superb, and will be great examples for my students, in writing their screenplays.

I am disappointed to report that only two students out of five (one was absent) scored high on their History Test last Wednesday.  THANK YOU to my Seventh Graders who studied.  Well done!  The failure rate on this test was due to a lack of preparation and study on the students’ part.  Despite this, it is not too late to improve the overall grades for history.  If your child studies for the history tests in future, he/she will achieve a high grade in history.  Parents, I will need your cooperation with this problem, please.  Thank you.  This coming week in history, we will finish reading Chapter 17, which focuses on the Renaissance.

The homework for this coming week is as follows:

  • Study for the retake of the Literary Terms Test on Tuesday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 11 in Wordly Wise.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 11 of Wordly Wise.
  • Work on the plot for your “Screenplay.”
  • Write up the history definitions from Chapter 17 of Medieval and Early Modern Times.

One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.  ~ Arthur Ashe

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a GRAND week ahead.
