Happy Veterans’ Day!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all the parents who were involved in decorating the McKeon Center for the Sock Hop.  You did an outstanding job!  THANK YOU to all the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade parents and students who baked cakes for the Cake Walk at the Sock Hop.  The Sock Hop was a GRAND success, and everyone had a great time.

This week in literature, the Eighth Graders will continue to read Night by Elie Wiesel.  In addition to this, they will have a Literary Terms Test on Tuesday, November 12.  Please encourage your child to study for this test.  Thank you.  On Friday, we finished watching the DVD of Animal Farm, which brought the book to life for my students.  They appeared to enjoy it very much.  This week, we will prepare for the next writing assignment “What I Learned By Reading Animal Farm by George Orwell.” I will distribute the guidelines on Tuesday, November 12, and we will discuss them at length.

This week in history, the Eighth Graders will finish reading Chapter 3 of our history book America.  We will read about The Articles of Confederation, Shay’s Rebellion, The Virginia Plan, the New Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.  This week, I will distribute the notes for the next History Test, which is scheduled for Thursday, November 21.

This past week in religion, we did not achieve all that I had planned for reading and discussion.  However, we read about and discussed suicide, homosexuality, murder, terrorism, war, and the death penalty with respect to the Fifth Commandment.  This week, we will read about and discuss domestic violence, environmental waste and pollution, and scandal, with respect to the Fifth Commandment.  If time permits, we will read about human sexuality in God’s image, adultery, and the importance of the virtue of chastity, with respect to the Sixth Commandment.  Heavy discussions!

The homework for this coming week is as follows:

  • Study for the Literary Terms Test (page 8) on Tuesday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 10 in Wordly Wise.
  • Spelling/vocabulary of the SAT words.
  • Complete all the exercises of Lesson 10 in Wordly Wise.
  • Rewrites of  Episode V of Pride and Prejudice for Friday.
  • Write up the history definitions from Chapter 3 into the history notebook for Friday.

The words that enlighten the soul are more precious than jewels.

Thank You to all our heroic Veterans!  Your service is greatly appreciated.  I wish all our families a very Happy Veterans’ Day! Have a grand week ahead!

Cheers,

Miss Susan
