Sock Hop on Friday!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all the parents who attended our Parent/Teacher conferences last Monday and Friday.  It was lovely to meet and chat with you all about your children’s academic and social progress.  We had an amazing turnout; thirty-six out of forty families attended.  Yahoo!

Last week in literature, the Sixth Graders commenced reading Greek Gods and Heroes by Robert Graves.  They were introduced to all the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus in Greece.  This week, we will continue to read about the power, bravery, mischief, greed, and trickery of the gods, goddesses, mortals and monsters of Greek mythology. In addition to this, they will be introduced to “Literary Terms,” and how to write a formal outline.

The Sixth Graders did a good job on their narrative poems.  They will be returned to them by the end of this coming week for rewrites and illustrations.  Some students still need to turn in the colored illustrations for their “Fables” and “Spooky Stories.”  The next writing assignment will be a formal outline of Skellig by David Almond.  I will distribute guidelines for this assignment.

This week in history, the Sixth Graders will prepare for the next History Test on Thursday, November 14.  They will also finish watching the documentary about the Maya.  In addition to this, I will read some of Hammurabi’s Codes, which always amuse my students.  The Sixth Graders should have all the history definitions from Chapter 3, written into their history notebooks by now.  This week, they should write in the answers to the pertinent questions for test preparation, if they haven’t done so already.

On Friday afternoon, the Sixth Graders will rehearse the first three scenes of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.  Please remind them to study their cues and lines.  Thank you.

Reminder:  The PTG will host the Sock Hop in the McKeon Center on Friday, November 8.  All are welcome to attend.

The homework for this coming week is as follows:

  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 8 in Wordly Wise.
  • Complete all the exercises and the CROSSWORD in Lesson 8 of Wordly Wise.
  • Write up all the history notes in preparation for the next History Test on Thursday, November 14.
  • Study the history definitions and questions/answers for the next History Test.
  • Study the cues and lines of A Christmas Carol.

Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead!

Cheers,

Miss Susan
