Sock Hop on Friday!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all the parents who attended our Parent/Teacher conferences last  Monday and Friday.  It was lovely to meet and chat with you about your children’s academic and social progress.  We had an amazing turnout; thirty-six out of forty families attended.  Yahoo!

THANK YOU also to the parents who sent in Halloween treats on Thursday, for our Halloween celebration.  We had a great variety of treats to share throughout the day.  I heard that my Eighth Graders had a WONDERFUL TIME at the Halloween party hosted by Monique and Tony Bobadilla.  THANK YOU!

Last week in literature, we commenced reading Night by Elie Wiesel.  I think this book will take my Eighth Graders’ sense of compassion to a very high level.  It is indeed heart wrenching.  In addition to this, the Eighth Graders returned to their study of “Literary Terms.”  They will have a Literary Terms test on Tuesday, November 12.  Please encourage them to study for it in advance, and not leave it to the night before the test.  Many thanks!

Last Friday, we started to watch the DVD of Animal Farm.  We will continue to watch it in segments during the next two weeks.  The next writing assignment will be “What I Learned By Reading Animal Farm By George Orwell.” I will distribute the guidelines for this assignment on Tuesday.

The Eighth Graders scored extremely high on the History Test last Wednesday.  The majority of the grades were A+’s and A’s (13), the rest were B+’s and B’s(3).  Well done, Eighth Graders!  I am so proud of you!  Keep up the great work!  This week in history, we will continue to read about governing a new nation, the Constitutional Convention, and debating the Constitution.

This past week in religion, we read about the Sabbath, the Pascal Mystery, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, Anne Frank and respecting oneself, respecting our parents, respecting life, and the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion and euthanasia.  This coming week, we will read about and discuss murder, terrorism, war, the death penalty, domestic violence, environmental waste and pollution, and scandal, with respect to the Fifth Commandment.  In addition to this, we will read about human sexuality in God’s image, adultery, and the importance of the virtue of chastity with respect to the Sixth Commandment.  All very heavy topics!

Reminder: The PTG will host the Sock Hop in the McKeon Center on Friday, November 8.  All are welcome to attend.

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Due to last week’s Halloween celebration, last Friday’s test and homework corrections of Lesson 8 will take place on Monday, as agreed by the Eighth Graders.  Episode VI of Pride and Prejudice is also due on Monday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 9 in Wordly Wise on Friday.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 9 of Wordly Wise.
  • Study the history definitions from Chapter 3 of America.
  • Study the literary terms for the Literary Terms Test on November 12.

Kindness is the language which the deaf hear and the blind can see.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead!
