ITBS Testing!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

The ITBS testing went well last week.  We should be finished with the testing on Wednesday.  Please ensure that your child is getting lots of sleep, and that he/she is eating a nourishing breakfast every morning, as this helps greatly with his/her concentration for the testing and his/her studies in general.  Many thanks!

I am disappointed to have to report that many Eighth Graders are not meeting the deadlines for their writing homework.  This behavior has forced me to implement strict measures regarding my grading system.  From now onwards, any deadlines that are missed, the student will receive a zero.  It is much too early in the school year to be slacking off on any homework.  I do not overburden my students with too much homework, so, I expect them to meet their deadlines and to give me their best work.  I want all of my students to be very successful in their academics.  Please encourage your child to complete his/her homework with great diligence.  Many thanks!

Ninety percent of the Eighth Graders are scoring A’s/A+’s on their weekly spelling/vocabulary test.  Great job!  I am very proud of you!

This past week in literature, we finished reading Animal Farm by George Orwell.  This week, we will analyze and discuss it in detail.    We also finished the last episode of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and the Eighth Graders were all happy with the ending.  We are still waiting on our order of Night by Elie Wiesel, therefore, we will commence reading (on the Smart Board) the epic poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel T. Coleridge.   It is a wonderful poem about the sanctity of life.

I need to move the History Test to October 29, as there was no time for preparation due to the ITBS testing.  This week in history, we will prepare for the  test.  Please encourage your children to study the definitions and questions/answers for Chapter 2 of the history book America.  Many thanks!

We will continue to read about The Ten Commandments in detail, in our religious studies.

Reminder: Parent /Teacher conferences are on Monday, October 28, and on Friday, November 1.  Thank you to all the parents who have signed-up.  I look forward to meeting with you.

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Summary of Episode V of Pride and Prejudice for Tuesday, October 22.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 7 in Wordly Wise and six SAT words.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 7 of Wordly Wise.
  • Rewrites of Episode II and III of Pride and Prejudice will be due on Friday.
  • Study the history definitions and the questions/answers for the History Test on Tuesday, October 29.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a grand week ahead!
