Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

Congratulations to all the students who ran for positions on the Student Council last Monday.  Your speeches were great!  I am so proud of you!  Well done!  The results of the election will be announced on Monday, at 10:00a.m., during the school assembly in the Serra Center.

The Eighth Graders continue to score extremely on their spelling/vocabulary tests.  Great!  From this week onwards, the weekly spelling/vocabulary test will have twenty words, as I will include an extra five SAT words to the list each week.  My students have received the SAT word list.

I am very concerned about the Wordly Wise homework from my Eighth Graders.  The scores were down by 75% of the class this past week.   This is unacceptable from such a strong group of students.  I can only conclude that they are not giving the necessary time to their homework.  Please encourage your child to do one section well per night, and to use a dictionary and the vocabulary list while doing his/her homework.  I know that my students spend a lot of time on their phones, iPods, and YOU TUBE etc.  However, their academics are much more important, if they are to be ready for high school.  I would like to nip this carelessness in the bud, as we have a lot of work to do this school year.   I trust that you will cooperate with me in this area.  Many thanks!

This coming week, we will continue our reading of Animal Farm by George Orwell.   In addition to this, last week, I commenced the reading aloud of Merlin, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.  We will continue our classroom work regarding journal writing, grammar, and basic life skills.

The first History Test will take place on Monday, September 30.  Please encourage your child to study the definitions and answers to the questions for the test.   This week in history, we will finish the reading of Chapter 2.

Last week, we commenced our study of The Ten Commandments, and have covered the first four Commandments.  This week, we will read about and discuss Commandment 5 through Commandment 10.

Reminders:  Our St. Francis Day and Horse Drop Picnic is fast approaching, i.e. October 5.  Thus far, we have only received two donations for our basket.  Thank you!  The theme is “A Lazy Day.”  Please send your donations early this week, if possible.  Many thanks!

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Study for the History Test of Chapter 1 for Monday.
  • Rewrites of the summaries of Episode I of Pride and Prejudice.
  • Write a summary of Episode III of Pride and Prejudice.
  • Study spelling/vocabulary of Lesson 4 in Wordly Wise and the five SAT words.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 4 of Wordly Wise.

It is not so much what is poured into the student, but what is planted, that really counts.  ~ E.C. McKenzie

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a GRAND week ahead!
