CONGRATULATIONS!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

A heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to all the Middle School students, for the wonderful inventions they shared and explained in great detail, last Thursday night at the Science Invention/Art Fair. I was delighted to see such creativity and genius on display. Everyone did a FABULOUS job! Well done! Big kudos to Ms. Lida, too. The slide show was superb! The children’s artwork was lovely; well done, Children and Mr. Sharp!

There will be a field trip to the Vista Courts on Thursday, March 21. The purpose of this trip is to get a wee glimpse of how the court system works. We will need drivers, so if you are available and willing to drive, please notify your homeroom teacher. The permission slips will be sent home with your child on Monday. Please sign and return them to your homeroom teacher, as soon as possible. Many thanks! This field trip promises to be an exciting day for your children. THANK YOU to Carmela Escobar and Laura Visco for arranging it.

I heard from Barnes and Noble during the week, and I have been assured that I should have our new books this coming week. We will read a biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge on the Smart Board to enhance our study and analysis of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. We will also continue to study the formats for writing a speech. Regarding the cursive homework. Your child must complete two pages of cursive every night from Monday to Friday. Cursive practice is not required on the weekends.

This week in history, we will continue to read and analyze The Constitution. I have a great app about The Constitution on my iPad, which includes many fascinating facts, which I will share with my Eighth Graders, as we read through the document.

For the next three weeks, during our religious studies, we will read from the Family Life books. Each chapter will be followed by a discussion. The final draft for the Serra Essays are due on Friday, March 15. I will also discuss “Safe Environment” on Wednesday, March 13.

A new five-week series titled The Bible commenced on the History Channel (Cox ~ Channel 55), last Sunday. It is EXCELLENT! It starts at 8:00p.m. A repeat of last week’s episode will be shown at 7:00p.m. I would like my Eighth Graders to watch it, especially, as they are going to reenact The Passion on Good Friday.

Reminder:The annual “Spaghetti Dinner and Book Fair” will be held in The McKeon Center on Thursday, March 14, at 5:30p.m.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 20 in Wordly Wise on Friday.
  • Write twenty sentences using the vocabulary from Lesson 20 and the SAT words.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 20 of Wordly Wise.
  • Complete the CROSSWORD at the end of Lesson 20.
  • The final draft of the Serra Essay is due on Friday, March 15.
  • Two pages of cursive in the Cursive Book per night.
  • Rough draft of your speech is due on Friday, March 22.

May your world be bright with cheer, may your cares all disappear,

May contentment come your way, and may laughter fill your day.

~ An Irish Blessing

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a GRAND week ahead.

Sincerely,

Miss Susan
