Science Invention/Art Fair Week!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

I can’t believe that we are already into March!  Time flies when you’re having fun!

On Friday, we had a visitor from the Serra Society, regarding the annual Serra Essays Competition.  The Eighth Graders  have received the instructions and the necessary paperwork, and have two weeks to write a 150/200 word essay.  During this visit, they watched a very dynamic video about the call to the priesthood.

During our Career Projects, several Eighth Graders chose “Lawyer” as one of their three career choices.  Therefore, on  Monday, we will have a visit from Mr. Raphael Acosta Jr., who is an Attorney.  He will discuss the road which led him to becoming an Attorney, and many other aspects of his career.  Time will be given to questions and answers, too.  I think this will be a very interesting and exciting class for my Eighth Graders.  THANK YOU, Raphael!

This week in literature, we will conclude The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.  We are waiting for our next book, Night by Elie Wiesel, to arrive from Barnes and Noble.  Last week, the Eighth Graders read about ten different formats for writing a speech, so this week, I will review these formats in detail with them, in preparation for writing their speeches.  This week, the Cursive Books will go home as nightly homework.  Each student is required to complete two pages per night.  I have seen a big improvement in many of my students’ cursive writing.

Seventy percent of the class scored extremely high on the History Test last Thursday.  Yahoo! Well done, Eighth Graders!  However, although this is not part of my regular policy for test taking, those students who failed the test will retake it on Monday, as they need to know the American Governmental System.  This week in history, we will study the Constitution.  Following this, there will be a test which specifically concentrates on the Constitution.

This week, our religious studies, will focus on how the Church evangelized the world.

Reminders:  1. THANK YOU to all those who have returned the permission slips for Family Life.  This class will begin on Monday, March 11.

2. The Science Invention/Art Fair will take place in the McKeon Center on Thursday, March 7, at 6:30p.m.  See you there!

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study for the retake of the History Test on Monday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 19 in Wordly Wise on Friday.
  • Write twenty sentences using the vocabulary from Lesson 19 and the SAT list.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 19 of Wordly Wise.
  • Start writing the rough draft of your speech.
  • Two pages of cursive in the Cursive Book per night.
  • Write a rough draft of your Serra Essay for Friday.

Praise youth and it will prosper. ~ Irish Proverb

Enjoy your weekend and have a GRAND week ahead.

Sincerely,

Miss Susan
