Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,

I hope that you all are enjoying this three-day-weekend.

Family Life classes are due to begin in March, so please return the permission slips that were sent home to you last week.  Many thanks to those parents who have already returned them to me.

A form was also sent home regarding Community Service Hours (16) for Eighth Graders.  They have already completed some of their community service hours with the Thanksgiving Baskets and the Christmas Baskets, which they delivered to Social Concerns.  During Holy Week, the Eighth Graders will conduct The Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday, and they will perform The Passion of Our Lord on Good Friday.  Therefore, by the end of Good Friday, each Eighth Grader will have completed eleven hours of Community Service.  There will be more opportunities to serve the community between April and the end of the school year.

Reminder: There is  a P.T.G. meeting in the McKeon Center on Thursday,

                                                 February 28, at 6:30p.m.

This week in literature, we will discuss and analyze The Odyssey by Homer.  In addition to this, we will finish The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (last week, we had to restart it, as my Eighth Graders had forgotten the details).  Last week, your child received the guidelines for his/her next writing assignment “Write a Speech.”  We discussed the guidelines in class.  This week, the Eighth Graders will learn ten types of formats that one can use to write a speech.

There is a History Test of Chapter 7 on Thursday, February 28.  Please encourage your child to study for this test.  Many Thanks!  This week in history, we will prepare for the History Test.

This week, our religious studies will focus on how a spirit of reform swept through Europe, and how the Church responded with the Counter-Reformation.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study the definitions and notes for the History Test of Chapter 7 on Thursday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 18 in Wordly Wise for Friday.
  • Write twenty sentences using the vocabulary from Lesson 18 and the SAT words.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 18 of Wordly Wise.
  • Research for your speech.

The words that enlighten the soul are more precious than jewels.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a GRAND week ahead!

Sincerely,

Miss Susan
