Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

Congratulations to Kimmy Kelly, Lauren McKinnell, and Samuel Nguyen for their outstanding performances in The Variety Show last Thursday evening.  I am both impressed and amazed by their great talent and confidence.  Fantastic!

This week, in our Language Arts studies, we will definitely finish The Odyssey (it has taken longer to read than I had anticipated).  In addition to this, we will return to the study of Literary Terms.  The Eighth Graders will also work in their grammar, cursive, and comprehension workbooks.

Last week,  in our study of history, we finished the reading and analysis of The Declaration of Independence.  There is a History Test of Chapter 6 on Thursday, February 14.  Please encourage your child to study his/her definitions and notes for this test.  Many thanks!  We will also finish the reading of Chapter 7 of our history book, The American Journey, which focuses on the aftermath of The American Revolution.

Last Wednesday, the Eighth Graders took the Acre Tests for their religious studies.  After the test, they all felt that they had done well.  Last Friday, we began our rehearsal of The Passion, and we blocked three-quarters of it, which is a record.  Everyone was fully focused and cooperative.  I am so proud of my Eighth Graders!  This week, in our religious studies, we will study how the Renaissance and Humanism influenced the Church.

Reminders: We are going on a field trip to the university in San Marcos (where we will learn about college life and career choices) on Tuesday, February 12.  THANK YOU to Laura Visco who organized this field trip.  We will depart at 9:15 a.m. and return at 1:30p.m.  Nine students have turned in their permission slips.  I need the rest of the permission slips on Monday, please, so that I can make the transport arrangements.  Your child will need $8 cash to pay for lunch in the university’s cafeteria.  There are four good choices on the lunch menu.

We will have a short celebration on St. Valentine’s Day at 10:00a.m.  The Eighth Graders may bring cards and treats for their fellow students.

The homework for this week is as follows:

  • Study for the History Test of Chapter 6 on Thursday, February 14.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 17 of Wordly Wise on Friday.
  • Write twenty sentences using the vocabulary words.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 17 of Wordly Wise.

I love your children!  They brighten my day, every day.
