Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

The Eighth Graders have completed their first week of the new year, and they have adjusted nicely to their school work.  All reported that they had enjoyed their Christmas break.

This week, we will continue to read the adventures of Odysseus in our reading of The Odyssey.  I have added twenty  sentences to the weekly homework, as some students were not using their vocabulary correctly.  In addition to this, your child will start work in a cursive book, as many students are scribbling instead of writing neatly.  Hopefully, the cursive books will help with their cursive skills.

There will be a History Test of Chapter 5 on Wednesday.  Please encourage your child to study for it. I distributed the notes for this test last Tuesday.  We will continue reading Chapter 6 of the history book, which focuses on The American Revolution.  We will also continue our historical journey of the 20th Century on DVD.

This week, the Eighth Graders will read about the Inquisition and the Black Death in our religious studies.

Reminders: The Middle School Dance is on Friday, January 25, in the McKeon Center, from 6:30p.m. to 9:30p.m.  The Eighth Graders are expected to help with the cleanup, as they are all members of The Student Council.  Therefore, they will need to remain until 10:00p.m.  I will need chaperones (at least eight) to help guard the entrances.  If you are willing and available to chaperone on that night, please contact me or Marge or Laura.  Thank you.

There will be  a meeting to discuss preparations for the Eighth Graders’ Graduation, 2013.  The meeting will be held in my classroom at 6:30p.m. on Wednesday, January 30.  Please attend, if possible.

The homework for this coming week is as follows:

  • Study for the History Test of Chapter 5 on Wednesday.
  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 13 in Wordly Wise for Friday.
  • Write twenty complete sentences, one for each vocabulary word.
  • Complete all the exercises in Lesson 13 of Wordly Wise.
  • Finish the Career Project for Friday.

Knowledge is the one commodity of which we can never have a surplus.  It is not what is poured into the student, but what is planted, that really counts.  ~ E.C. McKenzie

Have a GRAND week ahead!
