Merry Christmas!

Dear Sixth Grade Parents,

Congratulations to all the wonderful Sixth Graders who gave an OUTSTANDING performance, last Monday night, in their play A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens!  Everyone was SUPERB!  I am so proud of each one of them.  It was a joyous night!  I have the best job in the world.  Thank you to Paul Friedman for videotaping the play for us.  We all look forward to your masterpiece.  Thank you to the Acosta Family for the gift of the beautiful book A Christmas Carol.  I have been a big fan of Arthur Rackham (the illustrator) since I was sixteen.  The illustrations are fantastic.  Thank you also to the Friedman Family for the stunning Christmas plants.  They look great in my entry-way.

This past week in Language Arts, the Sixth Graders read about “Greek Gods and Goddesses,”  “Demeter’s Lost Daughter,” “The Titans,” and “The Underworld of Tartarus.”  This coming week, we will continue to read in Greek Gods and Heroes by Robert Graves.  For Literature on DVD, we started to watch Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.  Needless to say, my students were hooked immediately.  We also continued work in their grammar workbook and journals.  Many Sixth Grade students have been involved in the play Annie, and have had a lot on their plates….in addition to this, some students have been very sick.  Therefore, there will be no Wordly Wise homework this week, as I would like to focus on the class work that we missed the week of our rehearsals for A Christmas Carol.  Wordly Wise homework will resume after Christmas.

This Monday, December 17, the Sixth Graders have a History Test of Chapter 4 which deals with the history of Egypt.  They have known about this test for several weeks.  So, I hope that they have studied for it. This past week, we read Chapter 5 of the history book Ancient Civilizations, which focused on” The Ancient Hebrews and Judaism.”  I distributed the notes for the next History Test, which will take place on January 17.

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Study for the History Test on Monday, December 17.

NO HOMEWORK DURING THE CHRISTMAS VACATION!  RELAX!  ENJOY!  HAVE FUN!

THANK YOU to the following families who paid for the three licenses for the use of Doceri between the iPads and the Smart Boards: Michelle and Raphael Acosta, Jud Fidellow and Karen McKinsey, Michelle McGowan and Paul Friedman, and John and Mary Rudick.  Many, many thanks!  Your generosity knows no bounds!  We three teachers truly appreciate all that you do for us.  Many thanks!

Gratitude is the memory of the heart.  ~ J.B. Massieu

I wish you all  a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Here’s to another fun-filled year of working with your very lovable children.  Have a GRAND week ahead.

Love,

Miss Susan
