Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

I trust that you all have had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends, and that you will enjoy what remains of it.  I wish all our families a safe trip who have to travel and brave the traffic on Sunday.

Thank you once again for your generous donations to the Thanksgiving baskets.  The Eighth Graders worked hard in collecting and delivering all the baskets to their assigned sites.  They actually broke a record in the time they completed the job.  I am so very proud of them!  They are a great team!  Well done, Eighth Graders!  Thank you to all the parents who donated to our Thanksgiving pizza party, especially to Marge Ontiveros, Laura Visco, and Pam Arias.  My Eighth Graders thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

This past week, we only had one academic work day (Monday).  We read about and discussed the Seventh Commandment, “Thou shall not steal.”  Then, we continued our reading of The Odyssey.  This was followed by a discussion about the Career Project, and then, we watched Act V of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.

This coming week, we will finish watching Julius Caesar, which will be followed by a discussion, and the Eighth Graders will write poetry about Caesar.  We will continue to read about the adventures of Odysseus in The Odyssey, as he tries to return home to Ithaca.

We are almost finished Chapter 4 about colonization in our history book The American Journey, so we will finish it this week.  On Tuesday last, we started to watch The New World, a movie about the colonization of America.  It is listed number five on the list of the ten best historical movies ever made about the colonization of America (numbers one through four are too violent).   My Eighth Graders were glued to the screen, as it brought to life what we had been reading in the history book.

This coming week during religion class, we will read about the Eighth and Ninth Commandments “Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor” and “Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife.”  I’m sure we will have interesting discussions, as always.

The following is the homework for this coming week:

  • Spelling/vocabulary test of Lesson 10 in Wordly Wise on Friday.
  • Complete all the exercises of Lesson 10 in Wordly Wise for Friday.
  • Write a descriptive summary of Career 2 for Friday, including detailed information (see guidelines).
  • Rewrites of Animal Farm homework are due on Friday.

Have a GRAND week ahead!
